Cloudy with a chance of pain

New analysis by University of Manchester researchers both confirms and expands on initial findings from the Cloudy with a Chance of Pain study

Back in October researchers from the University of Manchester published their initial findings from the 15-month long smartphone study into the relationship between weather and long-term pain. In the 2019 paper, the team used a statistical approach to look at the difference in local weather between days where individuals experienced increased pain compared to days where they didn’t. They found that increases in pain were associated with higher humidity, lower pressure and stronger winds. In Weather Patterns Associated with Pain in Chronic-Pain Sufferers, recently published by the American Meteorological Society Journal, Dave Schultz (Professor Synoptic Meteorology) analysed the data across all of the UK as a meteorologist would do* and came up with similar results. However, another statistically significant finding emerged – higher than average precipitation was also a feature on those higher pain days.

Cloudy on the One Show

Suzanne's Story

The Joy of Music: music therapy as an effective alleviator of chronic pain

David Limmer is a music therapist based in Edinburgh. Since completing his training in 2015, he has written articles about music therapy for Pain UK and the Marfan Trust, and given presentations on music therapy, pain management, and visual impairment at several conferences and training days. He recently created a new music therapy post for the RNIB and now works with visually impaired adults with complex additional needs in Glasgow and Fife.
